New Access Control System for Student Accomodation

Norwich University of the Arts

As part of a complete refurbishment of the student accommodation block at Duke Street, we designed, supplied and installed a new Access
Control System.

As part of a complete refurbishment of the student accommodation block at Duke Street, CTS were required to design (in consultation with the main building contractor and the Client), supply and install a new Access Control System, to be integrated with the University’s existing Access Control Systems.

Given the nature of the building, securing access using a flexible, user friendly system, was imperative.

Norwich University of the Arts occupies a number of substantial buildings in the centre of Norwich. The University attracts students from all over the world wishing to study arts and drama related subjects, including fashion, photography, and design.

CTS were delighted to take over the ongoing maintenance of the University’s existing Monitored Intruder Alarms, CCTV and Access Control in 2019. CTS Security have since provided corrective and preventative maintenance, upgrades and additions to their systems where required, together with new installations.

We installed a Siemens SiPass Access Control System. This is a scalable system which can be used for premises such as single low-rise offices with a few doors, to high-rise complexes with thousands of doors, gates, barriers and elevators at multiple sites.

The system provides a high level of security which can also serve as a security management station that integrates access control, intrusion detection and video surveillance into a single system. It can be managed by many different operators with varying levels of authority. A key feature of this system is Anti-passback and Roll Call. Anti-passback prevents the same card from being used to gain access to the building twice. The Roll Call feature ensures the accuracy of head counts in the case of an emergency evacuation.

“It was good to have CTS involved in our new Duke Street Riverside project. We have been utilising their experience and professionalism since 2019 and on this occasion it was invaluable as they, our preferred service provider, knew what we required from the finished project. This in turn it made the whole project work so much smoother in regard to client/main contractor communications. We are now in the position of having their skilled engineers service and maintain the system that they themselves have installed.”

“Gaining Norwich University of the Arts as a client has been a great success for CTS. We have built a strong working relationship with the staff at the University since they first moved their business to us in 2019 and we have been pleased to assist them with the ongoing maintenance of their Intruder Alarms, CCTV and Access Control Systems since then. We have also advised on, and carried out, various upgrades and new installations for the University, and I trust that our working relationship will continue over many, many years to come.”
